Rendell hits the road for transportation solution

August 12, 2010

Gov. Ed Rendell completed a four-day, statewide bus tour last week to drum up support for a solution to Pennsylvania’s transportation funding problem.

The governor has called for a special legislative session to address the issue, and House and Senate transportation committees have held hearings.

Rendell’s bus stops drew heavy crowds in most places, with attendance at several exceeding 100. Many participants were members of the Keystone Transportation Funding Coalition, a diverse collection of organizations interested in a well-funded transportation program.

Whether the General Assembly will produce a comprehensive solution this year remains to be seen. Industry representatives point out that failing to address the issue before the current legislative session ends on Nov. 30 will wipe out a significant portion of the 2011 construction season.
