PHIA and its members in the news

May 4, 2011

Several events coalesced around PHIA’s Transportation Conference and Annual Meeting on April 26.

Governor Corbett announced the formation of the Transportation Funding Advisory Commission, which includes several members of the PHIA board. They are PHIA President Tom Lawson, APC Executive VP Bob Latham, Ted Leonard of the Pennsylvania AAA Federation, Brad Mallory of Michael Baker Corp., Jim Runk of the Pa. Motor Truck Association and Craig Shuey of the Pa. Turnpike Commission. For more information about the commission and a complete list of members, click here.

In his keynote address at the annual meeting, PennDOT Secretary and former PHIA President Barry Schoch, who chairs the commission, noted that the panel would focus strictly on funding options and not rehash studies done previously. The commission is expected to provide recommendations by Aug. 1.

The conference also received mention in an editorial in the Harrisburg Patriot-News calling anew for a long-term plan to address the needs of the transportation system (to read the editorial, click here. The Patriot-News was recognized at the luncheon for its insight into the funding issue and for its continuing support for a comprehensive solution.

“We’ve had a good run the last few weeks,” said PHIA Managing Director Jason Wagner. “The advisory commission appears to be off to a good start, and we’re optimistic that there will be progress in addressing the funding issue. It’s gratifying to see PHIA members and past members provide leadership for such an important issue.”
