2014 Road & Bridge Safety Award Program Opens

December 11, 2013

PHIA has launched its annual Road and Bridge Safety Improvement Award program for 2014.  The annual contest is now taking applications by members of the PA State Association of Township Supervisors (PSATS).

Each year the Pennsylvania Highway Information Association (PHIA) and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) team with various state organizations to recognize the best road safety or bridge improvement projects undertaken across the state.   Eligible projects are those in which most or all of the safety improvements were completed in 2013.  The competition recognizes not only major, high-cost projects, but any improvements that have increased public safety.

The PSATS program will recognize townships’ use of highway user fees for needed community safety improvements, culminating in a presentation to the winners at PSATS’ annual conference at the Hershey Lodge and Convention Center on April 13-16, 2014.  Click HERE to download a copy of the entry brochure.  The entry deadline is March 7, 2014.

Additional programs for the PA State Association of Boroughs, County Commissions Association of Pennsylvania, the PA State Association of Township Commissioners, and Pennsylvania Municipal League will be announced throughout 2014.

New Transportation Funding Law Information Available

December 6, 2013

On November 25, 2013, Governor Tom Corbett signed into law the most significant transportation funding package the Commonwealth has seen in nearly 17 years.  In fact, many would argue the enactment of Pennsylvania’s new $2.3 billion plan is the most significant investment in transportation since Governor Gifford Pinchot’s road-building program transformed the Commonwealth in the 1930s.

Understanding the new 127-page transportation funding law (now Act 89 of 2013) can be a daunting task.  PHIA is here to help.  We’ve created a PA’s New Transportation Funding Law page on our website to be your resource for information, summaries, charts, etc. on the new law.  PHIA plans to continually update this page as updates and additional information become available.

Please contact PHIA if you have any questions.
